Tulving LTM essay plan

  • Tulving LTM AO1
proposes memory can be divided into two separate store: the episodic memory and semantic memory
episodic =a mental diary of personal memories, dependent on time referencing (memories linked to the time they occur), dependent on context learnt in, susceptible to transformation due to retrieval cue failure, has continuous input
semantic: remembered facts/words/rules, has no temporal link so can be recalled without time referencing, not dependent on context learnt in, more robust and less susceptible to transformation, can be inputted in a fragmented way
  • Tulving LTM AO3 strength
evidence in case studies eg Clive wearing - damaged his hippocampus and couldn't form new episodic memory but could still retain and make new semantic memories = supports theory saying there are two separate stores
CA: cases study = not generalisable as it is a unique case of brain damage so may be different to 'normal' memory and brains = hard to apply to wider populations memory
SW: however the evidence does provide factual evidence which supports Tulvings LTM theory
  • Tulving LTM AO3 weakness
can be considered reductionist - simplifies LTM into just two stores = can't account for full complexity of memory, doesn't explain how the STM is linked to the LTM and ignores role of procedural memory within the LTM = potentially incomplete
CA: only talking about two stores allow a deeper understanding of each to be made rather than more in less detail, provides a base for others to develop off it
SW: overall is reductionist though as can't fully account for all parts of memory so further knowledge and research would be needed to complete the explanation of memory
