Halide Ions

Cards (5)

  • Testing for Halide Ions
    1. Acidify solution with dilute nitric acid
    2. Add silver nitrate
  • Chloride ions form a white precipitate that is soluble in dilute nitric acid
  • Bromide ions form a cream precipitate which is soluble in concentrated nitric acid
  • Iodide ions form a yellow precipitate that is insoluble in concentrated nitric acid
  • Adding dilute nitric acid causes carbonate ions to react, removing any incorrect positive results
