RP6: Test for alcohols, aldehydes, COOH

• Tests for aldehydes:

  • Tollen's reagent (silver mirror forms)
  • Fehling's solution (brick red precipitate)
• Test for COOH:

  • Na2CO3 (effervescence)
• Test for alcohols, aldehydes:

  • Acidified potassium dichromate (orange to green colour change)
• Using the minimum number of tests for aldehydes, ketones, acids, haloalkane:

  1. Sodium carbonate
  2. Acidified potassium dichromate
  3. Fehlings/Tollens
  4. Silver nitrate
