Social democracy= seeks to reform capitalism, not overthrow it (revolutionary socialists)
Key principles:
Equality
Collectivism= humans are social animals who prefer to work collectively. The welfare state must be funded by taxes: we are all entitled to it. (1945-1951 Labour gov, nationalised key industries)
Capitalism= must be controlled. Key industries must be nationalised.
Social justice= free education and welfare= (Clement Atlee 1945, formation of NHS) + Strong laws to guarantee equal rights.
Class + society= economic equality= welfare
New Labour (Third Way) Tony Blair - 1994-2010
Third Way= Capitalism is necessary + unavoidable, it is an ideological middle ground, a break away from Socialism
Key Principles 1.
Individualism (leans into some aspects of liberalism)- emphasis on the potential of the individual= low income tax, home ownership + small businesses encouraged
Free market - accepted as the best form of wealth creation = No more nationalisation + further privatisation (Tony Blair's removal of clause 4) Trade unions should be weak - making the Labour market free
New Labour (Third Way) (Tony Blair) -1992-2010
Key Principles 2.
Welfare state - supported + increased spending
Social justice= Minimum wage + HRA 1998 brought in by Tony Blair
Communitarianism - caring for community= strong social services.
1970s/80s Labour Party:
Labour party was out of office for many decades
In the 70s there was a radical tradition , centred on Michael Foot, Tony Benn which wanted to restore Trade Union power, increase worker’s rights,
1983 Manifesto was called ‘the longest suicide note in history’ and failed to win popular support
Afterwards, Labour turned more to centrist or even right wing policies, in an attempt to combat Thatcher. Support for the market, favouring of more ‘moderate policies’, business/enterprise etc
Muslim voters
71% of muslim voters vote for Labour (dramatically fallen, since war in Gaza)
