Factors affecting rates of reaction

Cards (8)

  • 4 factors that affect rate of reaction
    Temperature
    Concentration of solution
    Pressure of gas
    Surface area
    Presence of catalyst
  • Increasing temperature
As temperature increases, particles move around faster.
They collide more often with more energy
Collision is more likely to have enough energy to react successfully
  • Increasing concentration
    More particles = more collision
  • Increasing surface area
Breaking it into smaller pieces means increasing the surface area to volume ratio. This means, for the same volume of solid, the particles will have a greater area over which they can collide.
  • Collision theory
For partilces to react, they have to collide with sufficient energy at the right direction
  • Activation energy
Amount of energy particles require to react together
  • Why do particles need activation energy
They need energy to break bonds of reactants, so the reaction can begin
  • Catalysts
Speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy required for a reaction to occur. This is done by giving an alternative reaction pathway that requires less energy
