    • 7 adjectives of the seven deadly sins? Specifically his avarice.
    • Biblical motifs used throughout, the sense that calloused capitalism goes against teachings of god.

    • The stinginess of scrooge , his lack of meritocracy and abundance of selfishness highlighted.

    Marley
    • metaphor for the consequences of selfishness, marley forged his OWN chain, the personal responsibility of people is emphasised. Trapped by such a lumbering chain, his choices in life have immortalised his punishment.
    • Cautionary warning/tale to scrooge, who remains "startled" yet in denial of such, "more gravy" than "grave". Foreshadows scrooges future and need for change + audience.

    Narrator - scrooge
    • First true sign of empathy and sympathy in scrooge, he cries, a sign of vulnerability and unravels the upbringing of pain that shaped Scrooge as a man.
    • He projects onto society the disregard he was treated with.
    • Upon unravelling this, "wishes" he could have "given something" to a carol knocker. He begins to see the pain of other through acknowledging his own.

    Belle
    • Reminded of scrooges true heartbreak, a result highlighted in this snippet as the consequence of his selfishness. By this point his is told his actions have not only got a permanent effect on the afterlife, but harms himself now, as much as others.
    • Deeply pained, he looks back with regret and remorse, the first step to change is thus exemplified by Dickens as self reflection

    Ghost of christmas past
    • The ghost forces Scrooge to reflect on a personal level, of what innocence and vulnerability meant to scrooge

    Scrooge - describing Fezziwig
    The joy that fezziwig brings to his workers in his "jovial voice" can be seen as priceless, for kindness does not cost anything and yet holds so much wealth.
    For once, scrooge understands the pointlessness in miserly attitudes, his selfishness and calloused attitudes have brought him no more wealth, or for those around him

    Scrooge
    Through this forced reflection, he has nothing left to admit the guilt and regret he feels for what could have been, whilst the women he loved, but loved unwell, embraces a new family, he understands the joys of families that were destined for him.
    He is able to understand the exact root cause for his loss of familial connection, as his selfishness and distorted priorities of physical wealth over wealth in human connection and joy.

    Christmas present
    • pivotal point, the wretched children take aback an audience, for they are physical manifestations of each punitive flaw that lies in 1843 society. For the wealth divide is so great, the want signifies the upper class and aristocracy, how their avarice distorts society as they take more, and how ignorance portrays their ability to do so.
    • Upper echelons in society are presented as capable of treating the poor as such for their ability to ignore the consequences of their want, dickens wants to portray that if everyone was less ignorant and understood through empathy the true tragedy of want, it would be much harder to maintain the wealth divide.
  • “Mankind was my business.”

    Marley's ghost
    The first apparition openly proclaims a strong sense of social responsibility, being a reflection of scrooge if he were to continue in his miserly ways, his regretful reflection represents the inescapable consequence of your life choices, even if it means in death. Ultimately, everyone will realise that mankind functions best as a community, whether its realised too late or not is up to your own free will.

    Tiny Tim
    Shows tim's purity, a beautiful sight for an audience. a child hard done by in disability and poverty, exemplifies pure light and joy throughout, he makes his family wealthier in joy despite his ailments costing them, and as an audience it connects a tragic reality to the poor as the novell explores the consequence of his death

    Bob cratchit
    The pure unfiltered grief holds much weight, just the words on paper present the desperation and sadness Tiny Tim's death holds. The careless ignorance that allowed his death shows the harsh reality of the wealth divide in 1843 society. The heartless disregard of such an innocent character, who brought warmth, joy and wealth to the poorest of families allows the reader to feel this grief with Bob. By doing this, the curated emotional journey of the reader influences them to greater good, for the sake of people, the fictional character of Tiny Tim is so very human in this moment that its impossible not to connect him to the real lives of poverty in 1843 society.
