  • In the aftermath of the French Revolution, Germany was once known as the Holy Roman Empire.
  • In the early 1800s, there was no desire to unite and reform all 300 states associated with this empire, as each state had very differentiating stances on social, political and economic factors.
  • Napoleon in 1810 transformed these 300 into 16 larger states, gaining the title the German Confederation of the Rhine.
