  • "I don't think I could ever forget her" - Eric remembers Eva and feels guilty about what happened to her. Priestly wanted the audience to feel empathy for Eva and realise that everyone had a duty to treat others fairly and equally. By making Eric remember Eva, Priestly makes the audience remember her too so they can see the consequences of neglecting our duties to others
  • " As if we were all mixed up together like bees in a hive - community and all that nonsense " - this reinforces Mr Birling sanctimonious nature because he is presenting his ideas of socialism and society as fact, and one that shouldn't be disputed , but not only does he reinforce his sanctimonious nature, but reinforces this stuborn and ignorant nature that is poignant throughout.
  • The B and P plosive on 'cheap' and 'labour' creates a harsh sound which signifies sheilas realisation of the harsh and insufferable exploitation of her father's workers viewing people through money and status that are engraved into her , the use of 'girls' suggests the innocence and further exploitation.
