  • Events: Roberto ridolfi was an international banker who planned the catholic plot to overthrow elizabeth. Ridolfi had a letter signed by the duke of northolk declaring that he was catholic and would lead the rebellion against Elizabeth if philip 11 supported it. sir william cecil uncovered the plot and later ad enough evidence to prove that northolk was guilty of plotting against queen elizabeth
  • parliament met in 1571 and demanded he execution of both duke of northolk and mary elizabeth signed the duke of northolks death warrant but not marys. the plot highlighted the threat of english catholics collaborating with spain to overthrow elizabeth in order to keep Catholicism alive. in 1581 parliament passed 2 laws against catholics firstly recusants would be fined £20 (a large amount of money that would bankrupt most families) secondly attempting to convert people into Catholicism was treason
