The Greek temple we have to study are the
Parthenon
and
Temple of Zeus
The
sanctuary
was a
holy area
in a
city
or
town
that contained a
temple
and an
altar
to
worship
a
god.
What was the function of a Greek temple?
It was used to house the
cult statue
of the
God
that it was
dedicated
to.
Only
Priests
were allowed in the temple.
The
altar
was a very important part of the sanctuary as this was where the
sacrifice
and
offering
to the
gods
took place.
The room that housed the god's statue was the
cella
or
naos
The
opisthodoms
held all the
treasure
acquired in
warfare
and offerings to the
gods
What was the pediment?
The
triangle space
at either end of the temple. This could contain a
sculpture
or be
left blank
What is the Ionic Freize?
A
continuous strip
of
stone
or
marble
that
runs
around a
temple.
What is a Metope?
A
continuous strip
of
stone
or
marble
that is
divided into squares
In order to
honour
the
gods
the
Greeks
would give them offerings. This was done was through the
killing
of an
animal
as a
blood sacrifice
The sacrifice can be divided into three parts:
● the
preparation
● the
kill
● the
sharing
of the
sacrifice.
