• The Demographic Transition Model shows the birth, death rate and total population of a country at a time
• What stage of the model a country is in will depend on its economic development
• In stage 1 birth and death rates are high
• A country in stage 1 is an LIC because high death rates signal poor healthcare and the total population of the area remains low
• People also have more children in stage 1 due to poorer education and availability of contraception
• In stage 4 there is a low birth and death rate
• Women have less children in stage 4 because they focus on having a career and their children do not die young
• People in stage 4 live longer as healthcare is better so there is a lower death rate
• The Uk is a HIC in stage 4
