Crowd behaviour

Cards (4)

  • deindividuation is a concept used to explain the behaviour of individuals in a crowd
  • as we live in a society where aggression is discouraged ,usually our aggression is constrained by social norms
  • But when we become part of a crowd we lose restraint and act aggressively
    1. feel less of a chance of consequences for being aggressive leading to disregard for norms/ laws
    2. diffusion of responsibility meaning we feel less personal guilt/ responsibility for aggressive actions toward others
    3. individual -consistently monitor your own behaviour ,checking behaviour considered within our norms act rational and in line with norms→ less agg. deindividuated- lose self-awareness, stop monitoring and regulating own behaviour, ignore norms and do not think of the long-term consequences, become emotional impulsive and disinhibited →increasing aggression
