    all students regardless of ability, gender, class and ethnicity are educated equally for free with the same opportunities to obtain qualifications

    pay fees to enrol and are given more opportunities within a hidden curriculum which supports hierarchy, elitism and future leadership roles

    schools funded or run by religious organisations/churches and comply with the national curriculum

    independent, non-fee paying state schools that receive funding from the department of education focusing on science and technology to try to innovate development of the curriculum

    not funded by the state but rather from parental fees, some are selective but many take students regardless of ability (or public schools)

    secondary schools that specialise in specific subjects whilst delivering the national curriculum and given additional funding to develop their specialised area

    provided by voluntary bodies e.g. churches and are funded by local education authorities
  • what is an academy
    independently managed, all ability schools set up in disadvantaged areas by sponsors, funded by the DCSF and don't follow the national curriculum
