Biology inheritance

Cards (26)

  • Individuals inherit half of their genetic material from their mother and half from their father.
  • Natural selection: „Survival of the fittest”
    • Organisms with the most favourable characteristics would survive and reproduce and their offspring would inherit good genes.
    • Charlie with less favourable genes would starve and die. He would not pass on his “short neck” genes. survive will live on and the weaker genes will die out.
  • If you do drugs during pregnancy than the baby is more easily to get addicted to it.
  • A is ureter
  • B is urethra
  • Sperm cell (23)+ egg cell (23)= fertilised cell(46)
  • XX= Female
    XY=Male
  • Men determine the Sex of the baby.
  • For sexual reproduction to take place, a male sperm cell and female egg cell have to join together. Their 2 nuclei become one.
  • #That what you aquire during your life time cannot be passed on to your offspring (losing a limb, tattoos etc.)
    # Charecteristics can only be passed on if it is encoded in your DNA
and you cannot externally change your DNA in a natural way.
  • The process by which an organism passes its characteristics onto its offspring is called Inheritance.
  • Discontinues Variation
#Variation that has a distinct set of option of categories.
    Example:
Some people are able to roll their tongs and others cannot.
(Able to roll) (not able to roll)
  • Inherited
    Characteristics
What we get from our our parents ex, eye
color, hair color and all physical features.
  • Aquired
    Characteristics
What we develop through out our lifetime. Ex, bigger muscles, loss of a limb, swimming skills etc.
  • The excretory system works like this: First, blood flows into the kidneys, which act like filters. The kidneys remove waste and extra water, turning them into urine. Then, the urine travels down tubes called ureter‘s to the bladder, where it's stored until we're ready to pee. When we go to the bathroom, the urine leaves the body through a tube called the urethra.
  • Sperm cell (23)+ egg cell (23)= fertilised cell(46)
  • The new cell has a full set of chromosomes and also contains a new combination of DNA
    (half mother 👩🏽 half father 👨🏽 )
  • Embryo= Small ball of cells that develop from a fertilised egg cell.
  • Genes
    # Short sections of DNA
that contain a set of instructions to produce one specific molecule in your body, usually a protein.
    • Organisms with the most favourable characteristics would survive and reproduce and their offspring would inherit good genes.
  • Characteristics with less favourable genes would starve and die out.
  • Having a short neck as a giraffe is a less favorable gene because they have it harder to reach food. Characteristics with less favorable genes like short necked giraffe, would not pass on there "short neck" genes because they would die out, from not getting food.
    • Small ball of cells that develop from a fertilized egg cell in to a baby, and It becomes attached to the uterus lining and develops.
    • Charles Darwin: He was the first to propose the theory of natural selection.
  • Lamarck theory was wrong because, things that happens during your life time cannot be passed on to your offspring (losing a leg, getting a tattoo, etc.)
  • # Characteristics/inheritance can only be passed on if it is encoded in your DNA.
