  • One strength is there is research to support its effectiveness. For example a meta-analysis found that CBT had a 75% success rate for patients suffering with depression. Furthermore .kuyen et al compared drug therapy and cbt and found that 15% more participants relapsed within 1 year in drug therapy condition comapred with those recieving Cbt This shows it is a well-supported therapy for reducing depressive symptoms and is effective in helping the majority of patients recover in the long term. This suggests Cbt give patients skills for life and
therefore can signfificantly improve their quality of life.
counter+ it doesn't work for 25% of people-this suggests other potential therapies like drug therapy still need to be considered
  • One issue with CBT is that it requires motivation. It can require up to 20 sessions and is a big comittment especially for those struggling to cope. Therefore many people may consider antidepressants and drugs an easier and quicker alternative as they require less effort from patients. furthermore
Patients with severe depression may not engage with CBT, or even attend the sessions and therefore using soley this treatment will be ineffective in treating these patients. Therefore for severely depressed patients other treatments such as drug therapy may be required before they are able to cope with the demands of the therapy.
cujipers et al found cbt works most effectively when used in conjunction with drug treatements
