  • NUTRITION CARE PROCESS AND MODEL (NCPM) ● Adopted by the American Dietetic Association’s (ADA), House of Delegates (HOD) in 2003. ● ncludes the four-step Nutrition Care Process (NCP) along with a conceptual framework that describe the relationship between the dietetics professional and the setting in which they function ● ADA has focused which the attention on encouraging dietetics professional (RD/DTR) to utilized the four step NCP in practice
  • Resistance is most often due to lack of understanding of what a care process is, how health care professionals use care processess can be used to demonstrate effectiveness of intervention in improving health outcomes.
  • HEALTH CARE ENVIRONMENT ● great deal of interest being given to the quality, quantity and cost of health care provided in the U.S
  • HEALTH CARE QUALITY ● The definition of quality may be almost anything anyone wishes it to be although it is, ordinarily, a reflection of the goals current in the larger society of which it is a part” ● Care quality is often defined differently depending on the viewpoint of interested stakeholders

  • CUSTOMERS ● Healthcare professionals who work alongside the RD/DTR. ● Expect a quick response to questions and concerns about nutrition care for patients. ● Provides nutrition therapy ● Employers are also customers as they expect the RD/DTR to work efficiently.
  • CARE PROCESS ● The content of care, i.e, how the patient was moved into, through, and out of the
    healthcare system, and the services that
    were provided during the care episode.
  • PROBLEMS ● Lack of consistency in providing healthcare identifies the need to further evaluate care processes, including how nutrition care is provided.
  • Quality triad: process, structure, and outcome.
  • Avedis Donabedian — pioneer in the evaluation of healthcare quality. He advocated the evaluation of care processes as a key component of the quality triad.
