Phase Change

Cards (7)

  • Phase change of matter is a change that affects the form but not the chemical composition
  • Causes of phase change:
    • Temperature
    • Kinetic energy
    • Intermolecular spacing
  • Melting is a process that turns solids into liquids. THIS IS DUE TO THE ABSORPTION OF HEAT OF MOLECULES THAT DISTURBS ATTRACTIVE FORCES OF MOLECULES. CAUSING THEIR MOLECULES TO HAVE GREATER INTERMOLECULAR SPACING.
  • Freezing is a process that turns liquids to solids. The temperature affects the attraction of molecules, increasing intermolecular force, causing a more fixed position of molecules (releasing heat). Freezing occurs in cold temperatures
  • Condensation is a process that involves turning gases to liquids. During condensation, heat is released
  • Sublimation is a process that turns a solid directly into a gas without passing through the liquid state
  • Deposition is a process that turns gas into a solid. IT HAPPEN WHEN THE TEMP IS EXTREMELY LOW.
