    The brain and spinal cord
    Process and interprets sensory information from the sense organs
  • Peripheral nervous system
    All the nerves that don't form the central nervous system
    Includes sensory and motor neurons
    Can be subdivided into the somatic and automatic
  • Somatic nervous system within the peripheral nervous system

    Includes all sensory and motor nerve cells connecting to skeletal muscles
    Voluntary
  • Automatic nervous system within the peripheral nervous system

    Includes motor neurons connecting to internal organs
    Involuntary and automatic
    Can be divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic
    Sympathetic is when we need a sudden burst of energy eg: fight, flight or freeze
    Parasympathetic reverses sympathetic to calm us down and return body to normal
