Findings

• when they first arrived in the UK, half the Romanian adoptees were retarded in cognitive functioning at initial assessment, and most were underweighted.
• At age 4 the Romanian orphans showed great improvements in physical and cognitive development.
• Those who were adopted before age 6 were doing as well as the control group of British adopted children.
• At age 11 the children adopted before 6 months had a mean IQ of 102, between 6 months – 2 years they had a mean of 86, after 2 years they had a mean IQ of 77.
