THE MULTI STORE MODEL

Cards (10)

  • What does the Multi store model describe?
how information flows through the memory system. Memory is made of three stores linked by processing
  • Who created the multi store model?
    Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
  • What are the three components of the multi store model?
    Sensory register
    Short term memory
    Long term memory
  • What is the sensory register?
Where all the stimuli from the environment pass through
  • How does information pass through SR to STM?
    Attention
  • What is STM?
A limited capacity store of temporary duration
  • How is information transferred from the STM to the LTM?
Rehearsing information for long enough. It is then retrieved from the LTM to the STM when we want to recall information
  • What is LTM?
    a permanent memory store
  • Strengths of the MSM
Research support - Baddeley found we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using STM (supports acoustic memory) But we mix up words with similar meanings when using LTM (Supports semantic memory)
Supports the MSM view that these two memory stores are separate and independent
  • Limitations of MSM
Evidence suggesting there is more than 1 type of LTM (HM)
    The working memory model
