  • Practical application
The principles of conditioning from the behaviourist approach have been used in real life. Classical conditioning has led to treatments for phobias, systematic desensitisation is used to replace anxiety with relaxation by associating relaxation with the feared stimulus.
  • Controlled environment
Skinner relied on the experimental method which used controlled conditions in an attempt to discover a possible casual relationship between the variables.
  • Animal research
Skinners and Pavlov’s research has been criticized because their experiments involve the study of nonhuman animals rather than human beings. This means it tells us little about human behaviour because of its reliance on dogs, rats, and pigeons.
  • Oversimplistic
The behaviourist approach only focuses on the role of learning and other human behaviour. Hence, it ignores other factors in shaping human behaviour such as cognitive factors, emotional states, and biological influences. Therefore, a holistic approach would have been more appropriate as it considers all factors in combination when studying human behaviour.
