Hormone regulation

    Cards (22)

    • The endocrine system is composed of glands which secrete chemicals called hormones directly into the bloodstream.
    • label endie
(if u cant figure out the 2nd word its probably gland)
      A) Pituitary gland
      B) thyroid
      C) pancreas
      D) adrenal glands
      E) ovary
      F) testicle
    • Blood glucose concentration is monitored and controlled by the pancreas.
    • If blood glucose levels are too high, the pancreas detects it and releases insulin.
    • Insulin acts in the liver to reduce blood glucose levels by:
-increasing glucose absorption from blood into liver and muscle cells. --converting excess glucose into glycogen.
    • What is type 1 diabetes?
It's a genetic disorder where the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin. This can cause uncontrolled high blood glucose levels. It can be treated with insulin injections.
    • What is type 2 diabetes?
When body cells do not respond to insulin produced by the pancreas. A carbohydrate controlled diet and an exercise regime are common treatments.
    • What is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes?
      obesity
    • When blood glucose concentration is too low, the pancreas releases glucagon which converts glycogen back into glucose and released into the blood.
    • Pituitary gland: found at the base of the brian and is called the master gland. this is because the hormones secreted stimulate other endocrine glands.
    • The pancreas: secretes two hormones: insulin and glucagon.
    • Insulin causes blood sugar levels to decrease
    • Glucagon causes blood glucose levels to increase
    • The adrenal glands are found above the kidney
    • The adrenal glands secrete adrenaline
    • Adrenaline increases metabolic rate
    • The thyroid is found in the neck
    • The thyroid secretes thyroxine
    • The thyroid regulates basal metabolic rate
    • What is basal metabolic rate?
The speed of chemical reactions in the body when it is resting
    • What are other functions of thyroxine?
Stimulating protein synthesis- for growth and repair of cells
    • The thyroid is stimulated by TSH
