RP4 - temperature change

Cards (12)

  • what are we investigating in this experiment?
the temperature change in an exothermic reaction
  • how are we investigating this temperature change
by the neutralisation reaction between the hydrochloric acid and the alkali sodium hydroxide
  • whats the independant variable?
volume of the sodium hydroxide solution
  • what is the dependent variable
    the maximum temperature reached
  • what are the control variables?
volume of hydrochloric acid and the concentration of both the hydrochloric acid and the sodium hydroxide solution
  • step 1?
measure 30cm of dilute hydrochloric acid with a measuring cylinder
  • step2
transfer the acid into a polystyrene cup and put the cup in a beaker, stopping it from falling
  • step 3
use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the acid recording the readings on a table
  • step 4
use a measuring cylinder to measure 5cm^3 of sodium hydroxide solution transferring it into the cup and fitting a plastic lid with a hole for the thermometer on top. (bulb of thermometer must be in solution.
  • step 5
use the thermometer to gently stir the solution (reaction is exothermic so it will release energy and the temperature of the solution will increase)
  • step 6
when temperature stops increasing, we record the highest temperature reached and repeat the experiment
  • how much do we increase the volume of sodium hydroxide solution
by 5cm^3 until a max. of 40cm^3 is reached
