Haitian revolution

• Unique out of the Atlantic revolutions because it was a slave rebellion.
• First no slave country in the western hemisphere
• It had a very strict social structure, everyone had their own role
• 95% of the population were slaves
• French revolution was the first one
• It produced sugar cane and tobacco and coffee for france and made french rich
• The haitians wanted freedom like people in america and no social structure like in france (after the french revolution)
• The French revolution allowed for the slaves to revolt, as the French were distracted.
• Both the American revolution and the Haitian revolution won independence from an imperial power.
• Enslaved Africans killed their masters and burned their homes.
• They were joined by maroons (escaped slaves)
• Toussaint L’Ouverture led the general rebellion against slavery.
• He established an independent government and played the french, spanish, and british against each other.
• L’Ouverture created a constitution that granted equality and citizenship to all residents and declared himself governor for life.
• He  worked with the French before being betrayed and imprisoned, dying in france.
• Jean Jaques dessalines was his successor and orchestrated a Haitian declaration of permanent independence.
• Haiti was that first latin american country to gain independence
