• The desire of common people for constitutional government and democratic practices caused the revolutions.
• nations got a new form of government that responded to the enlightenment main ideas: progress, reason and natural law
• Both the French and Haitian revolution grew out of the Enlightenment's insistence that men had natural rights as citizens and that legal restraints were limiting the freedom of people by forcing them into social classes.
• However the Haitian restraints were more severe and the rebellion was by people who had no rights at all.
