Tubewell

• The tubewell is a fairly new addition to Pakistan’s irrigation system. It can tap water up to depths of several hundred metres and is operated by diesel or electric motors. Tubewell also help to lower the water-table thereby protecting the land from water logging and salinity.
• Advantages of Tubewell:

  1. More efficient / faster / does not need to rest.

  2. Larger area can be irrigated.

  3. Regular supply / can be used at any time of year / continuous.

  4. Cleaner water.

  5. Reduces waterlogging and salinity.

  6. Less labor required.
• Disadvantages of Tubewell:

  1. Expensive / cannot be used by poor farmers.
  2. Maintenance is difficult / expensive.
  3. Diesel is expensive.
  4. Spare parts are expensive.
  5. Reduces groundwater / lower water table.
