  • Louis Pasteur was a French scientist. He was the first to link germs with disease.
  • Sugar beet, used in making alcohol, often went sour during fermentation and could not be used, leading to wastage.
  • New microscopes could now magnify substances to a much higher level.
  • Pasteur found microbes in the sour liquid. He called them ‘germs’ as he could observe them growing or ‘germinating’.
