• Right realists focus on the erosion of community norms and the likelihood of getting caught so they believe that by making crime harder to commit and making punishment more likely, criminals will be deterred. This differs from the New Right, who focus on the poor socialisation of the individual so focus on tougher penalties and stricter forms of social control, which make committing crime harder.
