specific heat capacity

Cards (10)

  • measure mass of block with a scale
  • wrap the metal block in an insulating layer to prevent energy trasnferring to surroundings
  • place a themometer in a hole in the block and measure initial temperature
  • connect a power supply and an ammeter to heater in a hole in block
  • turn the pd of power supply to 10v and turn it on and start a stopwatch
  • when power is on, the current transfers energy electrically to the heaters thermal energy store which is then transfered to the materials thermal energy store
  • as block heats up, take reading of the temperature and current each minute for 10 minutes
  • calculate power using the formula: power = current x voltage
  • you can use the power to find out how much any was used at each time the temp was recorded using e=p/t
  • find the specific heat capacity by using change in thermal energy= mass x specific heat capacity x change in temperature
