Caregiver-infant interactions in humans

Cards (4)

  • Attachment is a two-way emotional bond between two individuals in which each sees the other as essential for their own emotional security. The relationship is reciprocal
  • How do we recognise attachments?
    • Proximity - We wish to stay close to the person we're attached to
    • Separation distress/ Anxiety - We get upset when we are separated from our attachment figure
    • Secure base behaviour - We like to keep regular contact
  • 1st type of caregiver-infant interactions
Reciprocity - Describes how two people act with each other. It explains how the mother and baby respond to each other's signals.
A key feature is turn-taking (baby does something, mother responds)
  • 2nd type of caregiver-infant interactions
Interactional synchrony: Co-ordinated interaction between mother and baby. They carry out actions simultaneously by responding to each other's cues. This includes emotions and actions too.
