Analysing Qualitative Data

Cards (6)

  • The majority of qualitative data is generated by case studies, interviews, observations and questionnaires.
  • Qualitative data includes:
    • Transcripts of interviews ( in self reports)
    • Detailed observational notes
    • Video/ tape recorded material
    • Participants' own diaries
  • The main objective when analysing qualitative data is categorisation (to enable comparisons).
  • Initial categorising- where large quantities of written notes are read and re-read to group items together (looking for common themes).
  • Indigenous categories- where the researcher makes use of natural categories participants use to describe themselves. These arise from qualitative data that participants suggest in their own words- essentially they cannot be manipulated.
  • Use of quotations- consent is always needed for this. It is used to typify a particular point of view expressed.
