The majority of qualitative data is generated by case studies, interviews, observations and questionnaires.
Qualitative data includes:
Transcripts of interviews ( in self reports)
Detailed observational notes
Video/ tape recorded material
Participants' own diaries
The main objective when analysing qualitative data is categorisation (to enable comparisons).
Initial categorising- where large quantities of written notes are read and re-read to group items together (looking for common themes).
Indigenous categories- where the researcher makes use of natural categories participants use to describe themselves. These arise from qualitative data that participants suggest in their own words- essentially they cannot be manipulated.
Use of quotations- consent is always needed for this. It is used to typify a particular point of view expressed.
