  • What are the 4 different types of observations?
    • Participant Observations
    • Overt Observations
    • Non - Participant Observations
    • Covert Observations

    • rapport --> verstehen
    • can be one of the only methods which allows access to a certain group
    • Ecological validity
  • What is ecological validity?
    When participants are watched in their natural environment which increases the likeliness that they will act naturally
  • Practical issues of participant observations:
    • Access to sample (can be hard to in without a gatekeeper)
    • Gaining the trust and cooperation of the group --> building a rapport --> time consuming
    • Leaving the group once the research is concluded (getting out)
    • Limitations with researcher's characteristics with covert participant observations. (eg an old male trying to do a covert participant observation on teenage girls) --> access issues
