  • research to support concept of conforming to be correct. Asch's style variation studies found the more difficult the task the more conformity present. Therefore showing pts were unsure and conformed due to informational reasons. As a result, informational social influence is a valid explanation.
  • research support for normative social influence. when interviewed afterwards asch's pts said they conformed because they doubted own judgement and wanted to avoid rejection. in this situation they could not have conformed for informational reasons because the test for lines was obvious not ambiguous. therefore suggests normative social influence is valid and pts conform to avoid being ridiculed.
  • could be argued there is a better explanation than social impact theory. theory suggests we are more likely to conform when group is important to us. therefore theory is superior than NSI and ISI as can explain why we conform in certain social situations e.g. with friends, with strangers
  • it is unlikely that behaviour is due to ISI and NSI alone. it is likely both processes are involved together. when one person rejects the group it is logical conformity decreases due to social support and also an alternative source of information. therefore suggests to assume NSI and ISI are independent of each other lacks face valdity.
