  • one limitation of CBT is that it may not help people with very serious cases of depression. Extremely depressed patients may struggle to engage with the therapy and may struggle to maintain focus- using antidepressants first before Starting CBT can help. This is a limitation as it means CBT alone may not be sufficient as the sole treatment for depression in some patients.
  • Another limitation of CBT is its' effectiveness/success may depend on the doctor-patient relationship Luborsky found very small differences when comparing therapies, Suggesting that engaging with a therapist of any set is what's beneficial. This is a limitation as all therapies share the patient-therapist relationship.
  • One strength of CBT is that it's effective - this is research supported. For example, March compared treatments of teenage sufferers of depression and found after 36 weeks, 81% of subjects improved with CBT alone, 81% improved with only antidepressants This Shows that CBT is at least as effective as drug therapy in treating depression.
