  • The process involving the fusion of the nuclei of two gametes to form a zygote that are genetically different from each other.
  • The formation of gametes involves meiosis.
    • Advantage: Increases genetic variation amongst the species.
    • Advantage: The species can adapt to new environments due to variation, giving them a survival advantage.
    • Advantage: Disease is less likely to affect the population. (due to variation)
    • Advantage: We have the ability to use & control it for our own needs. (e.g. selective breeding & natural selection)
    • Disadvantage: Takes time and energy to find mates.
    • Disadvantage: Difficult for isolated members of the species to reproduce.
