    The main piece of legislation covering occupational health in Northern Ireland is the Health and Safety (Northern Ireland) Order 1978

    The first responsibility the employer has is to draw up a health and safety policy and appoint a health and safety officer.
    The second responsibility the employer has is to supply employees with protective clothing, goggles etc

    The HSE has the responsibility of enforcing health and safety legislation. It also gives advice on health and safety matters and on the law. The Executive shares this responsibility with local councils, depending on the issue. It also conducts research into the working and effectiveness of regulations, advising the government after consultation with both employers and employees.
