Argument Fallacies

Cards (5)

  • Petitio Principii
Circular reasoning, repeating the same thing in the sentence. Basically sounding like a child.

    Example:
Topic - Should there be a 3-day weekend?
“No, because a 3-day weekend will make people slobs because it makes them lazy”
  • Argumentum ad Ignoratium
Assuming that a fact is true simply because it has not been proven false, and vice versa.

    Examples:
Topic - Should there be a 3-day weekend?
“The only reason for a 3-day weekend is to improve people’s wellbeing, but there‘s no research that would prove it would.”

    Topic - Is God real?
    “No because there’s no evidence”
“Yes because there’s no evidence to prove it isn’t real”
  • Ignoratio Elenchi
Using something irrelevant from the argument

    Example:
Topic - Should there be a 3-day weekend?
”A 3-day weekend wouldn’t be beneficial because babies don’t even need weekends.”
  • Argumentum ad Baculum
Permitting to the force to bring about the acceptance of a conclusion

    Example:
Topic - Should there be a 3-day weekend?
”A 3-day wouldn’t be possible because there’s no way offices would allow it!! 🤓”
  • Argumentum Ad Hominem
An irrelevant attack on a person’s character instead of trying to disprove the soundness of the statement.
    Example:
Topic - Should there be a 3-day weekend?
“No because Margaux is stupid and wouldn’t do anything but sleep during the extra day.”
