Lab 4

Cards (19)

  • Four types of Macromolecules
    Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acid
  • Benedict solution is a chemical indicator for simple sugars(carbohydrates) such as glucose. negative test is blue. D1 water is an aqua blue and the glucose solution turns orange(positive control)
  • Iodine solution is a chemical indicator for complex carbohydrates like starch. Negative test is Yellow/orange. Blue is positive
  • Lipids
Composed of long hydrocarbon chains. Large amounts of energy stored in bonds.
  • Sudan IV is an indicator for hydrophobic molecules such as fats(lipids) negative test is pink
  • Biuret solution is a protein. and the negative test is light blue positive is a dark purple
  • Carbohydrates
Fuel for cells. Found in simple sugars and complex sugars. Indicators are benedicts and iodine solution
  • A carbohydrate is present in milk
  • Starch is present in potatoes
  • Tuna is a protein
  • Mystery smoothie has to be nucleic acid
  • Proteins responsible for structure of organs and muscles. can also be use as fuel
  • Positive control is an experiment whose results is already known to be positive.
  • A negative control. Can be done with a sample that should normal yield a negative result
  • positive controls validate that the experiment is capable of detecting the desired effect, while negative controls help rule out alternative explanations for observed results.
  • Starch test
tuna and potatoes Do have starch is a daek blue(positive). While Mike doesn’t and is orange(negative)
  • Sudan test:
Potatoes milk oil water mixed in well it was positive. the tuna was the negative
  • Benedict test
    All of them have glucose
  • Bluret test
Tuna was positive, milk& unknown had a slight change in color some protein. Potatoes was negative
