MSM

Cards (7)

  • strength of MSM?
P - support from studies showing that LTM and STM are different.
E - baddeley found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when we are using our STMs. but we mix up words that have similar meanings when we use ours LTMs. further support from studies of capacity and duration.
L - studies clearly show that STM and LTM are separate and independent memory stores.
  • what is the sensory register?
From all stimuli in the environment. Its coding is modality specific, Its duration is 0.5 seconds. It has a very high capacity and it passed further on if you pay attention to it
  • what is STM?
it is coded acoustically. It lasts 18 seconds. It is a temporary store and its capacity is 7 + or - 2. To pass it onto LTM it must be done through maintenance rehearsal
  • what is LTM?
It is rehearsed for a prolonged amount of time. It is coded semantically and it lasts a lifetime. Its capacity is unlimited. To pass back into STM you need to go through retrieval
  • what is a weakness of the MSM?
In everyday life we don’t not use digits, letters and constant syllables instead we use things with meaning. All research has used this which may mean MSM is not a valid model
  • what is a weakness of the STM in the MSM?
KF had amnesia and when digits were read out loud to him he struggled to remember. When he read them to himself, recall was better. This shows that there could be a STM store for non verbal sounds. This shows that the MSM is wrong
  • what is wrong about rehearsal in the MSM?
The MSM talks about the amount of rehearsal which is needed for memory to be passed on LTM . However it is the type of rehearsal that you do. Elaborative rehearsal is needed as it helps link information into existing memories. This shows that the MSM doesn’t explain how LTM is achieved.
