WMM

Cards (8)

  • What is the central executive ?
Monitors incoming data. It focuses and divides attention. It allocates subsystems to tasks and it had a limited capacity and does not store information.
  • what is the phonological loop ?
Stores auditory information. The phonological store is what we hear and the articulatory process allows maintenance rehearsal. The capacity is 2 seconds worth of what we can say.
  • what is the VSS?
It stores visual and spatial information. It has a limited capacity of 3 to 4 objects. The visual cache stores visual data and the inner scribe makes the arrangement of objects in the visual field.
  • what is the episodic buffer ?
it is a temporary store for information. It allows maintenance time sequence. It has a limited capacity of 4 chunks. It acts as a storage for the Central executive. It links working memory to LTM and cognitive processes.
  • what evidence is there for the WMM?
KF had poor STM for auditory information but his visual ability was normal. This meant his PL was damaged but his VSS was still intact. This supports the existence of separate visual and acoustic memory stores
  • What is a weakness of the WMM?
It is unclear whether KF had other cognitive impairments. His trauma could have affected his cognitive performance. This therefore challenges evidence
  • another strength of the WWM is...?
Baddley et al’s participants carried out visual and verbal tasks at the same time. The performance was similar when both tasks were separate. But (e.g both verbal) the performance declined. This was because they were competing for the same subsystem so therefore it shows that there are separate subsystems.
  • what is wrong with the nature of the CE?
There is a lack of clarity and the CE must be more specific than just being attention. The CE is therefore just an unsatisfactory component and this challenges the integrity of the WMM.
