EWT: misleading info

Cards (8)

  • What is the study of EWT and leading questions focused on?
The influence of leading questions on eyewitness testimony
  • How can leading questions affect a person's response?
They may lead you to give a certain answer
  • what is the study for post event discussion ?
Gabbert et al put participants into pairs. Each participant watched a video of same crime but from different views. So one saw elements which other one different. then discussed what they saw. 71% mistakenly recalled events they did not see. This compared to a control group which was 0%. This is called memory conformity. EWT was altered and distorted as they combined misinformation.Memory conformity happened as they went along to win approval or they thought others were right. However actual memory was unchanged
  • what is real world application for EWT?
It had practical uses in the criminal justice system. Loftus says that police officers must be careful how they phrase questions. Psychologists help improve the legal system as it protects innocent people from faulty convictions based on unreliable EWT.
  • what is a limitation for EWT?
Loftus and Palmer's participants were in a lab and this is very different from real life where it is more important. Research participants may be less motivated to be accurate. Researchers are pessimistic about the effects. EWT may be more dependable
  • What is another limitation for EWT?
Sutherland and Hayne showed participants video clips. When they asked misleading questions their recall was more accurate. They focused on central features and memories were resistant to misleading information. The original memory survived and was not distorted
  • what is support for post event discussion ?
Post event discussion alters EWT. Skagerberg and Wright showed participants different video clips but there were two version(mugger had different coloured hair)They did not report what they saw but what they heard from the other person but a blend of the two. The memory was distorted through contamination rather than memory conformity
  • how can practical applications of EWT be affected by issues with research?
Loftus and Palmer had 45 participants watch film clips of a car accident. The question was to describe how fast the car was going in each one. There were 5 groups and each had a different verb (How fast were cars going when they hit each other.) Those who had verb contact, their mean speed was 31.8 and those who had smashed was 40.5. verb encouraged participants to choose a higher speed. They did a second test if leading question affected memory. Those who had verb smashed said they saw broken glass (there was not). shows that it altered participants memory
