Convex and Concave Lens

Cards (13)

  • What are the 2 lens types?
    -convex
    -concave
  • What types of images can a convex lens produce?
-Real or virtual images can be produced as the focal point can be before and after the focal point
  • What types of images can concave lenses form?
-Concave lenses can only form virtual images as the focal point can only be before the lens
  • What are the 3 main features of a lens diagram?
-The 3 main features are the Principal axis, focal point, focal length
  • What is the focal point?

-The focal point is the position at which rays of light travelling parallel to the principal axis converge
  • What is the principal axis?

-The principle axis is an imaginary line that passes through the center of the lens
  • What is the focal length?
-The focal length is the distance between the center of the lens and the focal point
  • What does a convex lens diagram look like?
-The convex lens diagram consists of an oval shaped lens which lines refract off of onto the focus point. The lines then split outwards. When drawing ray diagrams dray focal point and make sure to mesure focal length
  • What does a concave lens diagram look like?

A concave lens is also known as a diverging lens as the rays of light diverge outwards through the lens. As there isnt one place where all light focuses on the focal point is infront of the lens creating a virtual image. Shaped like those sand time things. Focal length still measured the same way
  • When is a Lens known as diminished?
-When the image formed is smaller than the size of the original object
This is measured via the distance of where the image is formed to the principal axis (Center line)
Compared the distance of image to principle axis
  • How do we know from a lens diagram that an image is smaller than the object?
-If the focal point is closer to the lens then it is to the actual object that is being viewed
  • If image is formed below the principal axis it is an inverted image
  • As seen in the concave diagram the dotted lines are fake light rays that converge. That is where the image forms. The fake light rays means it is a virtual image
