14. Connectives

Cards (6)

  • Connective: a word or phrase that connects the ideas of a speech and indicates the relationship between them
    1. Transition
    • They are words or phrases that indicate when a speaker has just completed one thought and is moving on to another
    • State both the idea the speaker is leaving and the idea she or he is coming up to
  • 2. Internal previews:
    • Let the audience know what the speaker will take up next
    • More detailed than transitions
    • Works just like the preview statement in a speech introduction, it comes in the body of the speech when starting to discuss main point
  • 3. Internal summaries
    • The reverse of internal previews
    • Internal summaries remind listeners of what they have just heard
    • Used when a speaker finishes a complicated or particularly important main point or set of main points
  • 4. Signposts:
    • Brief statements that indicate exactly where you are in the speech
    • Just numbers (ex: The first, second, final..)
  • Four types of speech connectives
    1. Transitions
    2. Internal preivews
    3. Internal summaries
    4. Signposts
