    Amylase in saliva
  • What is the oesophagus>?
    Muscular tube that connects the mouth and the stomach
  • What happens in the stomach?
    1. Food gets pummelled by the muscular walls
    2. Pepsin the protease enzyme is produced
    3. Hydrochloric acid is produced
  • Why is hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach?
    To kill bacteria and to give the optimum pH for the protease to work
  • What happens in the liver?
    Bile is produced
  • Where is bile produced?
    Liver
  • What does the gall bladder do?
    Stores bile

    Gall bladder
  • What does the pancreas do?
    Produce protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. Releases these into the small intestine

    Small intestine
  • What happens in the small intestine?
    Protease, amylase and lipase are produced to complete digestion. Nutrients are absorbed out of the alimentary canal into the body.

    Duodenum and ileum
  • What happens in the large intestine?
    Excess water is absorbed from food
  • What happens in the rectum?
    Faeces is stored here before exiting the anus
