Biodiversity and change in micro-organism

• Viruses can not be placed in an kingdom , because the are living and non-living
• Micro-organisms that cause diseases are pathogenic
• the study of viruses is virology
• Viruses are 'living' because they are host specific and can only reproduce in a living host
• Viruses are non -living because the do not ,eat ,breathe ,respire or produce stimuli
• Viruses that infect plant cells have RNA
• Viruses that infect animal cells have RNA or DNA
• Viruses that effect Bacteria are called bacteriophage and have a core of DNA
• Viruses are acellular and do not contain cytoplasm or organelles
• Viruses do not perform metabolic activities
• Viruses are obligate endoparasites, they only reproduce once in Host cell
• Viruses are parasitic and can infect plants , animals and bacteria
• HIV destroys blood cells which weakens the immune system
• AIDS is when you have HIV and contract a secondary disease
• Symptoms of AIDS are : Weight loss ,sweating ,TB , diarrhea
• HIV is transmitted through sexual intercourse, sharing needles, blood transfusions and mother to child transmission
• You can avoid getting AIDS by using condoms , not sharing needles , not having sexual intercourse with multiple partners and when dealing with bleeding people use gloves and protective clothing
• Treatment for HIV is PEP (needles to be taken within 24hrs of exposure to virus for 28 days ,used for medical professionals and rape victims ) and ART (Slows down the life cycle of the virus)
• Environmental effects : viruses helps keep a normal population size and used as biological control agent for plants and animals
• Gene Therapy : injected with healthy gene from human and targets the unhealthy tissue replacing it with healthy tissue
