  • Maternal Death or Maternal Mortality rate: death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of the termination of pregnancy

  • 2,400 women die every year from preventable causes during pregnancy and childbirth
  • Strategies in the Philippines aim to improve maternal and child health, like the Safe Motherhood Program and Child Survival Program
• Gaps in service delivery and program utilization in the Philippines:

  • Emergency Obstetric and Newborn care available only in secondary and tertiary hospitals
  • Past policy accommodated Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) training and home deliveries, but failed to link TBA to the formal health system
• Maternal, Newborn Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) strategy aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates and address risks through interventions from pre-pregnancy to postnatal stages
