  Assassination of the Grand Duke Sergei, Tsar's uncle, killed by a Socialist Revolutionary bomb.

  Nicholas reaffirms his faith in autocratic rule but also promises an elected consultative assembly and asks Bulygin to prepare draft proposals
• April

  All-Russian Union of Railway Workers is established and everywhere workers begin forming illegal trade unions
• June

  Mutiny on the battleship Potemkin
• August

  Treaty of Portsmouth ends Russo-Japanese war, Russia concedes territory to Japan including Southern half of the island of Sakhalin
• September

  Zemstvo conference rejects Bulygin's draft proposal, known as 'Bulygin's Duma' and demands a Duma elected by universal suffrage 
• Protest on the Potemkin- one of the Russian Black Sea ships- began over a mouldy meat ration and led to full scale mutiny in which seven officers were killed. The sailors hoisted the red revolutionary flag and sailed to Odessa, where they placed a dead sailor's body at the bottom of 'Potemkin steps' between the city and the harbour.
• When the townsfolk arrived to pay respects and show solidarity with the sailors, troops fired on them. Many jumped into the sea and more than 2000 were killed
