2a Nervous System functioning

Cards (6)

  • The neuron is a nerve cell that receives and transmits neural information
  • The Human Nervous system is made up of billions of neurons, including three main types: Sensory Neurons (Afferent), Motor Neurons (Efferent), and Interneurons found only in the Brain and Spinal cord
  • Neurons do not travel; they form Neural Pathways, a series of connected neurons that send signals from one part of the Nervous System to another
  • The Central Nervous System consists of the Brain and the Spinal Cord, while the Peripheral Nervous System consists of the Somatic Nervous System (voluntary) and the Autonomic Nervous System (involuntary)
  • The Autonomic Nervous System is subdivided into the Sympathetic Nervous System (action/stress) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (calm/relaxation)
  • The Sympathetic Nervous System dominates in threatening situations, increasing arousal and preparing the body for a quick response, known as the Fight-Flight-Freeze Response
