  • White blood cells:
    • Look at antigen (unique protein on the surface)
    • Engulf the cell with foreign antigen
    • Break down the pathogen with enzymes
    • Antibody is a protein made to clump several pathogens together, then engulf them at once
    • Antitoxins remove toxins (made from bacteria that will make our body feel sick)
  • Vaccines:
    • Dead or weakened pathogens are injected
    • White blood cells recognize the antigen from it
    • Create antibodies
  • Herd immunity:
    • Achieved when a large number of the population is immune
