enzymes

Cards (6)

  • what is an enzyme

an enzyme is a biological catalyst that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up in the chemical reaction itself
  • what is enzyme specificity
enzymes are highly specific in the reaction that it catalyses as well as the substrate it uitilises because if it’s active site having a specific shape
  • what is the lock and key mechanism
enzymes has an active site that will only recognize specific molecules. the enzyme which is the lock and the substrate which is the key bind at the active site forming an enzyme-substrate complex. the reaction then takes place and the substrate leaves the enzyme because it no longer fits in the lock. the enzyme remains unchanged
  • what time of reactions can enzymes have
anabolic (building up) or catabolic (breaking down)
  • pH change
    low pH denatures the enzyme
    high pH denatured the enzyme
    explanation:
due to the highered/lowered pH the enzymes denatured which causes the active site to melt so it can no longer function and join to a substrate so the reaction can no longer occur
  • temperature change
    low temp - inactive
    high temp - denature
    explaination:
due to the highered temp the enzymes denatured which causes the active site to melt so it can no longer function and join to a substrate so the reaction can no longer occur
